1. What is Seijin no Hi? 🇯🇵

Seijin no Hi (成人の日) is a national holiday held annually on the second Monday of January. Its purpose is to congratulate and encourage those who have reached the age of adulthood during the past year. It is a day when young people realize their new responsibilities and rights as members of society. In the Philippines, we have “Debuts” at 18 or 21, but in Japan, the entire country celebrates this together on one specific day!

「成人の日」は、毎年1月の第2月曜日に定められている国民の祝日です。その目的は、この1年間に成人（おとな）になった人々をお祝いし、励ますことにあります。若者たちが社会の一員としての新しい責任や権利を自覚する日でもあります。フィリピンでは18歳や21歳で個別に「デビュ（Debut）」のお祝いをしますが、日本では国全体でこの特別な日を一緒にお祝いするんですよ！

2. The “Age of Adulthood” Confusion: 18 or 20? ⚠️

This is a very important point for you to know! For many decades, the legal age of adulthood in Japan was 20. However, in April 2022, the Japanese government changed the legal age to 18. This means 18-year-olds can now sign contracts (like renting an apartment or getting a credit card) without parental consent. However, please be careful: you still must be 20 years old to legally drink alcohol or smoke in Japan.

これは皆さんに知っておいてほしい、とても重要なポイントです！長年、日本の法律上の成人年齢は20歳でした。しかし、2022年4月から、日本政府は成人年齢を18歳に引き下げました。これにより、18歳から親の同意なしで契約（アパートを借りる、クレジットカードを作るなど）ができるようになりました。ただし、注意してください。お酒を飲んだりタバコを吸ったりできるのは、今まで通り20歳になってからです。

3. The Beauty of Furisode and Hakama 👘

One of the most beautiful aspects of Seijin no Hi is the traditional clothing. Women typically wear a Furisode. This is a special type of kimono with very long sleeves (about 100cm!). In the past, swinging the long sleeves was thought to ward off bad luck and “tie” good relationships. Men often wear a suit, but many choose to wear Hakama (traditional pleated trousers) with a family crest on their kimono jacket.

成人の日の最も美しい光景の一つは、伝統的な衣装です。女性は一般的に「振袖（ふりそで）」を着ます。これは袖がとても長い（約100cm！）特別な着物です。昔は、長い袖を振ることで厄を払い、良い縁を「たぐり寄せる」と考えられていました。男性はスーツを着ることが多いですが、家紋の入った羽織と「袴（はかま）」を選ぶ人もたくさんいます。

4. What Happens at the Seijin-shiki? 🏛️

On this day, local city halls hold a Seijin-shiki (Coming-of-Age Ceremony). There are speeches from the mayor and gifts for the new adults. After the formal ceremony, young people usually visit a shrine to pray for success and then go out with their childhood friends for a party. Since they are now legally “adults,” it is often their first time drinking alcohol publicly with friends (if they are 20).

この日、各市区町村の役所では「成人式」が行われます。市長からのお祝いの言葉や、新成人への記念品が贈られます。式典の後は、神社にお参りしてこれからの成功を祈ったり、地元の友達と一緒にパーティーに出かけたりするのが一般的です。法律的に「大人」になった日なので、20歳の場合は友達と公の場でお酒を飲む初めての機会になることも多いです。

For Filipinos living in Japan, you might see groups of these dressed-up young people at train stations or parks. It’s a great chance to say “Omedetou gozaimasu!” (Congratulations!) if you have a Japanese friend or neighbor reaching this milestone. They will be very touched that you know about their culture!
