### What is a Hanko? (はんことは何ですか？)

In the Philippines and many other countries, we sign our names by hand. However, in Japan, people use a personal seal called a **Hanko** (or **Inkan**) for everything from receiving packages to opening a bank account. It represents your identity and carries a lot of responsibility.

フィリピンや他の多くの国では、手書きでサインをします。しかし、日本では荷物の受け取りから銀行口座の開設まで、「**はんこ**（または**印鑑**）」という個人の印鑑を使います。これはあなたの身元を表すものであり、大きな責任を伴うものです。

### The 3 Main Types of Hanko (はんこの主な3つの種類)

Not all stamps are used for the same purpose. Depending on what you are doing, you might need a different kind of seal. Let’s look at the three main categories.

すべてのスタンプが同じ目的で使われるわけではありません。何をするかによって、異なる種類の印鑑が必要になる場合があります。主な3つのカテゴリーを見てみましょう。

認印 (Mitome-in)	Daily tasks, receiving mail.	A casual, unregistered seal for daily life.
銀行印 (Ginko-in)	Banking, finances.	A specific seal registered with your bank.
実印 (Jitsu-in)	Buying a car or house.	The most official seal, registered at the city office.

### How to Choose Your Design (デザインの選び方)

As a foreigner, you might wonder: “Should I use my first name or last name?” or “Should I use Katakana or the Alphabet?” Most foreigners choose to use their **Last Name** in **Katakana**. It looks professional and is easy for Japanese clerks to read!

外国人の方は、「名前と苗字、どちらがいい？」「カタカナかアルファベット、どっち？」と悩むかもしれません。ほとんどの外国人の方は、**苗字（ラストネーム）**を**カタカナ**で作ります。プロフェッショナルに見えますし、日本の担当者にとっても読みやすいからです！

You can even choose the material, such as wood, stone, or high-quality resin. For your first one, a simple wooden or plastic one is perfectly fine!

はんこの素材も、木、石、高品質な樹脂などから選ぶことができます。最初の1本なら、シンプルな木製やプラスチック製のもので十分ですよ！

### Where to Buy Your Hanko (はんこはどこで買える？)

When you arrive in Japan, finding a place to make a Hanko is easy. You can go to a specialized **Hanko-ya** (Hanko shop), some stationery stores, or even use a **Hanko Vending Machine** found in big stores like Don Quijote!

日本に到着したら、はんこを作る場所を見つけるのは簡単です。**はんこ屋**（専門店）や文房具店、さらにはドン・キホーテなどの大型店にある**はんこ自販機**でも作ることができます！
