Executive Summary / エグゼクティブサマリー

In Japan, how you address someone is the key to building trust and friendship. Honorifics like -San, -Kun, and -Chan are not just words—they are tools of respect and social harmony. Mastering them will help you connect deeply with Japanese people, whether at work, school, or in daily life.

日本では、人をどう呼ぶかが信頼と友情を築く鍵です。「さん」「くん」「ちゃん」といった敬称は単なる言葉ではなく、敬意と社会の調和を示すための大切なツールです。これらをマスターすることで、職場、学校、日常生活において日本人と深くつながることができるようになります。

Hello, future stars in Japan! I am your teacher from Samurai Japan Business Center. When you start your journey in Japan, one of the first things you will notice is that people rarely call each other by just their names. They add a little “suffix” at the end! Understanding these is the secret key to showing respect and building wonderful friendships.

皆さん、こんにちは!サムライジャパン・ビジネスセンターの講師です。日本での生活を始めると、人々が名前を呼び捨てにすることはめったにないことに気づくでしょう。名前の最後に小さな「接尾辞」を付けます!これらを理解することが、敬意を示し、素晴らしい友情を築くための秘密の鍵となります。

1. The Magic of “-San” (~さん)

If you are ever unsure of what to use, -San is your best friend! It is the most common and polite honorific. It is similar to “Mr.” or “Ms.” in English and can be used for almost anyone—your coworkers, your neighbors, or people you’ve just met.

何を使えばいいか迷ったら、「〜さん」が一番の味方です!これは最も一般的で丁寧な敬称です。英語の「Mr.」や「Ms.」に似ており、同僚、近所の人、初めて会った人など、ほとんど誰にでも使うことができます。

💡 Pro-Tip / 勉強のコツ

Never use an honorific for yourself! For example, if your name is Maria, say “I am Maria,” not “I am Maria-san.” It sounds a bit funny to Japanese people if you call yourself politely!

自分自身に敬称をつけないでください!例えば、名前がマリアなら「マリアです」と言いましょう。「マリアさんです」とは言いません。自分を丁寧に呼ぶと、日本人には少し面白く聞こえてしまいますよ!

2. Understanding “-Kun” and “-Chan” (~君 / ~ちゃん)

These two are used for people you are close to or who are younger than you. -Kun is traditionally used for boys or young men. In offices, sometimes bosses use it for their subordinates (both male and female). -Chan is used for babies, children, female family members, or very close female friends because it sounds “cute.”

この2つは、親しい人や自分より年下の人に使われます。「〜君(くん)」は伝統的に男の子や若い男性に使われます。職場では、上司が部下(男女問わず)に使うこともあります。「〜ちゃん」は、赤ちゃん、子供、女性の家族、または非常に親しい女性の友人に使われます。とても「可愛い」響きがあるからです。

Suffix (敬称) Best For (対象) Vibe (雰囲気)
-San (さん) Everyone / Adults Polite & Safe
-Kun (君) Boys / Younger males Friendly / Casual
-Chan (ちゃん) Children / Close friends Cute / Affectionate
-Sama (様) Customers / VIPs Very Formal

3. Surname or First Name? (苗字 vs 名前)

In the Philippines, we often use first names immediately. But in Japan, it is polite to use the Family Name (Surname) + San first. For example, if your friend’s name is Tanaka Ichiro, you should call him Tanaka-san. Using the first name “Ichiro-san” is usually saved for when you become closer friends!

フィリピンでは、すぐにファーストネーム(下の名前)を使うことが多いですよね。しかし日本では、まず苗字(名字)+さんを使うのが礼儀です。例えば、友達の名前が「田中 一郎」なら、「田中さん」と呼びましょう。ファーストネームを使って「一郎さん」と呼ぶのは、通常もっと親しくなってからです!

4. The SAMURAI Japan Methodology (サムライジャパンの指導方法)

At our Business Center, we teach these nuances through role-play and real-life scenarios. Students practice introducing themselves and others using the correct honorifics, so they feel confident in actual conversations. For example, we simulate a workplace where you must address a senior colleague vs. a junior colleague differently. This practical training ensures you don’t just know the words—you know how to use them naturally.

ビジネスセンターでは、これらのニュアンスをロールプレイや実践的なシナリオを通じて教えています。学生は正しい敬称を使って自分や他人を紹介する練習をし、実際の会話で自信を持てるようにします。例えば、先輩と後輩で呼び方を変えなければならない職場をシミュレーションします。この実践的なトレーニングにより、言葉を知っているだけでなく、自然に使えるようになります。

よくある質問 (FAQ)

Q: 「ちゃん」は男性にも使えますか? (Can “-Chan” be used for boys?)
A: Yes, sometimes! For close male friends or younger brothers, “-Chan” can be used to show cuteness or affection. However, be careful—using it with a senior male colleague might be seen as too casual or rude.
A: はい、時々使われます!親しい男友達や弟に対しては、「ちゃん」は可愛らしさや愛情を示すために使えます。ただし、年上の男性の同僚に使うと、カジュアルすぎたり失礼にあたる可能性があるので注意してください。

Q: 名前の後に何も付けなくても大丈夫ですか? (Is it okay to use no suffix at all?)
A: In Japan, calling someone by just their name without a suffix (called yobisute) is usually considered rude unless you are very close friends or family. Always use a suffix to show respect, especially with people you just met.
A: 日本では、敬称なしで名前だけを呼ぶことは(呼び捨てと呼ばれ)、非常に親しい友人や家族でない限り失礼にあたります。特に初めて会った人には、敬意を示すために常に敬称を使いましょう。

Q: 「先生(せんせい)」も敬称ですか? (Is “Sensei” also an honorific?)
A: Yes, “Sensei” is a special honorific used for teachers, doctors, lawyers, and experts. It can be used alone or in place of “-San.” For example, “Tanaka-sensei” shows respect for their expertise.
A: はい、「先生」は教師、医者、弁護士、専門家に対して使われる特別な敬称です。単独でも使えますし、「さん」の代わりにもなります。例えば「田中先生」はその専門性への敬意を示します。
