In Japanese, we have different ways to count depending on what the object is. While you might already know **”Ichi, Ni, San,”** we use a special “native Japanese” system for counting general objects. This is the **Hitotsu, Futatsu** system. It is incredibly useful because you can use it for almost any small, physical object when you aren’t sure which specific counter to use.
日本語には、物の種類によっていろいろな数え方があります。「いち、に、さん」はすでにご存知かもしれませんが、一般的な物を数えるときには特別な「和語（わご）」のシステムを使います。それが「ひとつ、ふたつ」です。どの助数詞を使えばいいか迷ったとき、ほとんどの小さな物に対して使えるので、とても便利です。

Think of the “Hitotsu, Futatsu” system as your “Universal Counter.” If you are in a shop and forget the specific word for counting bottles or papers, just use these! It sounds very natural and polite.
「ひとつ、ふたつ」のシステムは「万能な数え方」だと考えてください。お店でビンや紙の数え方を忘れてしまっても、これを使えば大丈夫です！とても自然で丁寧な表現になります。
Below is a table of the numbers 1 through 10 using this system. Notice how most of them end with the syllable **”tsu”**!
以下は、このシステムを使った1から10までの数字の表です。ほとんどの言葉が「つ」で終わることに注目してください！

Now, let’s look at how to use these in a real sentence! When you are at a restaurant and want to order, the pattern is: **[Item] + [Quantity] + [Kudasai]**. For example, to order two coffees, you would say: **”Koohi o futatsu kudasai.”**
では、実際の文章でどのように使うか見てみましょう！レストランで注文するときは、「[注文するもの] + [数] + [ください]」というパターンを使います。例えば、コーヒーを2つ注文したいときは、「コーヒーをふたつください」と言います。

To ask “How many?” using this system, you use the word Ikutsu (いくつ).
このシステムで「いくつですか？」と聞くときは、「いくつ」という言葉を使います。
