### 1. Passing Through the Torii Gate (鳥居をくぐる)

The **Torii** is the large gate at the entrance of the shrine. It marks the boundary between the human world and the sacred space of the gods. Before you walk through it, stand to the side and give a small bow.

**鳥居（とりい）**は神社の入り口にある大きな門です。ここは、人間の世界と神様の聖なる場所との境界線です。門をくぐる前に、道の端に立って、軽くおじぎをしましょう。

### 2. Purification at the Temizuya (手水舎で清める)

Before praying, you must clean your hands and mouth at the water pavilion called **Temizuya**. This represents washing away bad energy.

お祈りをする前に、「**手水舎（てみずや）**」で手と口を清めなければなりません。これは、悪い気を洗い流すことを意味しています。

1. Take the ladle with your right hand and wash your **left hand**.
2. Switch hands and wash your **right hand**.
3. Pour some water into your left palm to **rinse your mouth**.
4. Finally, tilt the ladle to wash the handle for the next person.

2. 左手に持ち替えて、**右手**を洗います。
